The Naked Eye is a result of a series started by New York artist photographer Erica Baum in 2008. Since then she has photographed the fanned-out pages of old soft cover books for an evolving series of pictures, which are so transformed by Baum’s incisive eye and flattening lens that they are often mistaken for collages. A precise economical storyteller, Baum reframes obsolete printed material, exposing new compositions, references and potential narratives. For this series she turned to books on botany and horticulture. Her photographs offer glimpses of plants in aquariums and gardens punctuated by vertical lines that restrict a full view.
